After browsing through the latest Pottery Barn Kids catalog I was pleased to find the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo and a little paragraph explaining that the catalog is printed on FSC certified paper. It went on to explain that the “FSC certification ensures that the paper used in this catalog contains fibers from well-managed and responsibly harvested forests that adhere to strict environmental and socioeconomic standards.” Pottery Barn Kids is one of the first catalogs in the country to participate in this program. For more information on this certification please visit the FSC.
There was also mention of their Recycle 100 campaign and upon further investigation on the Williams-Sonoma, Inc website I found out that the goal of their Recycle 100 campaign is to see recycling in 100% of their customers’ homes. The U.S. average is 50% and among their customers it is currently 60%. For more information please visit Williams-Sonoma, Inc.
Kristy is mom to Dax and in her two-year journey entitled “motherhood” she has begun to look at the world a bit differently. Since her sweet boy is now part of this planet she’s been researching to find healthier ways to do things and live a life of less impact. In a city that is less than “crunchy” it has been an adventure and she hopes to share some of what she’s learned both here and at her store Wee Willie Winks where she offers cloth diapers, organic toys and other earth/child friendly parenting solutions.
I was quite pleased myself until I checked the certification number and found it was not registered with FSC. I am currently waitin on a response from FSC.

Kristy,
As an employee of Pottery Barn Kids, I forwarded this blog to our Catalog Team (as we are very proud of our FSC certification) and here’s their response (somehow they are not able to post it themselves):
Dear Kristy and Dena,
Pottery Barn Kids recently came across your blog and wanted us to clarify your concern about the FSC claim on their catalogs. Williams-Sonoma Inc. (parent of Pottery Barn Kids) has made incredible strides in obtaining FSC certification for all their catalogs and they certainly do not want it to be cause for concern with their customers.
Given your blog, we assume you are familiar with the FSC Chain-of-Custody system and the fact that the FSC Certificate number that is displayed on an FSC certified product is typically that of the last supplier in the production cycle. In the case of the Pottery Barn Kids’ catalogs this would be their printer. So while Pottery Barn Kids has supplied FSC certified paper to their printer, it is their printer’s certificate number that is displayed on the catalogs.
We believe, based on your blog that your current concern may be the result of the printer of the Pottery Barn Kids catalogs having recently switched their accredited certifier. It appears the printer’s previous certificate number was prematurely removed from our database when the new certificate number was issued by the new certifying body. Up until and through their Summer catalogs the printer’s certifying body was SmartWood under certificate no. SW-COC-1081. Starting with their Autumn Pottery Barn Kids catalog the printer’s new certifier is SGS Systems and Services Certification Inc. under certificate no. SGS-COC-003312. This is now the certificate number that you will find on the current and all future Pottery Barn Kids’ Catalogs.
We sincerely hope this has addressed your concern.
Sincerely,
Katie J. Miller
