SFG mini-series reader Ryan reports that over at the Home Depot in Lake Mary, square foot garden enthusiasts can buy 4 cu feet bags of vermiculite from the Home Depot for $12.99.
When setting up my kitchen garden I was unable to find it near me in large quantity so I ordered from Home Harvest instead.
There is still time to throw a bed together and get some fast growers in before the summer heat wave kicks in an all veggie gardeners take a break before the fall season ramps up in late august/early sept.
Not that there is a lack of things do to for the organic veggie gardener in summer…

Thanks for the info. I jsut moved back into town and would like to start a littke garden in courtyard of my condo. I know I have to move fast as you say but what kind of “fast growers” would you suggest? Mind you I have more of a pale green thumb.
Thanks for the heads-up on the rain barrel workshop. One thing the current property lacks is rain catchment, and at the wonderful price of free, I can’t easily pass up the opportunity if I have the time free.
As I catch up with the archives, I may have more interesting things to say, but for now, nice to meet you in your web-space. :>
I’m just now gearing up the main garden (and feeling very much like the White Rabbit as I do so — “I’m late! I’m late!”) and hope to have some things harvested before the summer doldrums. We’re working on more sustainability and frugality projects here at the house (food, fuel, fiber), and I hope to have some blog-fodder from some of it.
Be well!

Thanks for the comments!
Layan — fast growers like radish (3 weeks) and bush beans (60 days) might still work out for you. YOu can also put in transplants to save time. Otherwise you can plant some flowers as you get stuff ready for the start of fall season for edibles.
