I was recently complaining to another Central FL Green Guide writer about the fact that I have not been able to find a natural deodorant that works for me in the summer heat. I explained that, while I used natural deodorant during the cooler months, I had resorted to conventional products during the summer.
Heidi recommended Funk Butter, an all natural, aluminum-free deodorant from Oyin Handmade. I hadn’t heard of this one and was eager to try it.
Wow! This stuff works! I ordered the unscented kind so hubby would want to use it, but now I wish I had tried the other scents after reading all the reviews. I’m going to order more soon. Here’s the list of ingredients for the unscented type (as listed on the package): baking soda, cornstarch, shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil, arrowroot, kaolin clay, calendula/chamomile powders, sweet almond oil, & good wishes. I can’t wait to try the “Coco Mango” and “Black Cedar Fig” scents. The reviews on the website are wonderful.

Funk Butter does indeed work! And it smells absolutely lovely! I will mention, just for others who may also experience this, that I can only use Funk Butter every two or three days. If I use it every day, my underarms get a really angry looking rash, and they peel. I have extremely sensitive skin, though, and I have not met many others who experience this. However, if you have really sensitive skin, you might want to be aware of this before you start using it every day.
I have also found that if I apply coconut oil to my armpits before using the Funk Butter, the rash is not as severe.
But, other than that, I just LOVE Funk Butter. I only use it when I need to stay mostly dry and smelling sweet because of my sensitive skin, but I am extremely satisfied when I do use it.
Hey, are you using the unscented version?
Where did you buy it?
I also had the rash problem (using the scented version) until I read about someone buying Oyin’s body butter in the same scent and applying it first. It makes your tin of funk butter last longer, and it doesn’t give you a rash. I love this stuff, and I’m glad it’s working for you too Jan!
Lisa you have to buy it from their website.. they just bought a warehouse and will be making it on a larger scale, and soon they should be selling it other places too.
Hi Jan, no I am using the, umm, the scented one, but not the mango one. The other one. Can’t remember what it is called.
I usually do not react to essential oils, though, so I’m not sure what it is. I think it might be the baking soda.
How do you use this deodorant? Is it a cream you lather on? I’m very interested in it!! All the positive comments definitely make it sound like a good buy!
It only bothers me immediately after shaving. Otherwise, I haven’t had ANY problems with rashes (with the unscented).
As for how you put it on, it’s a cream-to-powder formula.
I also LOVE the Funk butter!!! It’s also the only natural deodorant that works for me. I have sensitive skin and have had some irritation with the Black Cedar Fig, but love the scent soooo much that I just use it once in awhile. The Coco Mango is not as irritating for some reason.
A tip I just got from the oyinhandmade.com website is to add some oil to the Funk Butter if it dries out. You can use any kitchen oil and just add a couple of drops and stir with a chopstick or spoon handle. I am going to add some coconut oil to my Black Cedar Fig and see if that helps with the irritation.
They have podcasts with great information and tips, and then at the very end they give you a code for 10% your order!
HEATHER - It comes in a little metal tin, like shoe polish. You apply it with your hands.
I wanted to know if any stores in the are sell the Funk Butter. Shipping from the website is pretty expensive (about $12)
Lola-
I only know of it being sold online. Just recently ordered it and I love it!
