What is pain?
Pain is an unpleasant, sensory and / or emotional experience. It is a signal from the body that something is wrong. In your body you have pain receptors (nociceptors) that are sensitive to certain stimuli. These stimuli can come from outside or inside. External pain is caused by a pain nerve in the skin, the eye or the ear. A pain stimulus in the skin, for example, is caused by a splinter in your foot. Internal pain is caused by a painful stimulus from the organs or the musculoskeletal system, for example abdominal pain or muscle pain. When the pain receptors become stimulated, they send a signal to the brain so that you perceive the pain. How you perceive the pain stimulus differs per person. Pain is always subjective. Pain symptoms limit some people more than others.
